The Mass

What is a Catholic Mass?

The Catholic Mass is the celebration of the Holy Eucharist which is the “source and summit of our Christian life” (Lumen Gentium, 11).  At the Last Supper Jesus instituted the Eucharist.  He changed bread and wine into His Body and Blood as an offering of salvation for all. Following His command to “Do this in memory of me” we celebrate the Eucharistic Liturgy and unite ourselves to Christ.

THE HOLY MASS

Upon entering the church we bless ourselves with holy water from the baptismal font as a sign of our baptism into the life of Christ.

If the Blessed Sacrament is in the tabernacle (noted by a lit Sanctuary lamp next to the tabernacle) then we kneel (genuflect) on our right knee upon entering the pew before mass. You may make a profound bow (bow at the waist) if you are unable to genuflect. We do not genuflect while in procession, such as during Holy Communion.

A. I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, bow and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. StraightenFor our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
